FOR THERAPISTS
EMDR Consultation Services
1. Complete an EMDRIA approved EMDR Basic Training
The initial EMDR basic training is necessary for you to gain an understanding of the eight phases and begin to implement EMDR into your practice. The EMDRIA approved EMDR basic training curriculum requirements include a minimum of 20 hours of lecture, 20 hours of small group practice, and 10 hours of consultation. This training is considered the fundamental building block needed to begin to understand how to use EMDR appropriately with clients. The training teaches you in a step by step manner about the AIP model, each of the eight phases of EMDR therapy, and the three-pronged approach. It also helps you understand why each phase is important, and how it is used in practice. The training allows you to gain an understanding of and basic proficiency in EMDR therapy.
Ready to find a training?
Completed your Training? AWESOME! Let’s talk Certification.
The purpose of EMDRIA Certification is enhanced credibility in the field of EMDR. It is a way for you to set yourself apart and go to the next level. The core requirement of the certification application process is 20 hours of consultation on your use of EMDR with your clients. Here I can help you improve mastery of your EMDR skills, build confidence, explore specialized protocols for multiple populations, and learn to resolve issues when you come to stuck points.
The certification criteria:
- Maintain your state issued mental health license that allows you to engage in independent private practice
- Minimum of two years of experience in your field of license
- EMDR Basic training completion
- Minimum of 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 clients
- 20 hours of consultation with an Approved Consultant
- Letters of recommendation
- 12 EMDRIA Continuing Education Credits
- Adherence to EMDRIA Policies
Not ready for Certification but still want to grow… I can help!
Not all EMDR trainings are the same or cover topics in the same way. Consultation can be helpful to
- Learn how to conceptualize & approach complex trauma
- Focus on the phases you want to strengthen
- Learn how to break through stuck points
- Build your confidence using EMDR
- Consultation on your individualized cases
- Refreshers on Standard and Specialized protocols
- Learn how to adapt EMDR Online
It can be anxiety provoking and intimating to be in an EMDR session and not feel 100% confident in what to do when you get thrown a curve ball. I’ve learned first hand that when we feel unsure in a session our clients feel it too. This energy alone can interfere with our EMDR work and your clients ability to feel open and trust in the process. Consultation is a great place to go when you want specialized support.
Your reason for entering consultation directs the type of consultation we do. As you develop, you may choose to change the focus which is always welcome! When I first sought out consultation I had no intention of becoming certified. The amount of support, education, and confidence I received from my consultant was incredible and allowed me to move at my own pace.
- I require work samples of all 8 Phases and 3 Prongs of the standard EMDR therapy, and evidence of correcting any concerns prior to writing a recommendation letter for EMDRIA Certification. If you use more than one Approved Consultant on your journey toward EMDRIA Certification, I require a minimum of 15 hours of individual consultation prior to writing a recommendation letter for you to submit for EMDRIA Certification.
- I will document and track our time spent in consultation. I will retain documentation of our consultation together for a 5 year period from the date our work together concludes.
- I will write a letter of recommendation or written verification if you have acquired the skills and knowledge base to be Certified and demonstrate this. If the skills and knowledge have not been demonstrated, I can provide written documentation of the time spent in consultation, the skills and knowledge acquired and the areas still needing improvement. We will discuss issues as they arise especially if you are having difficulty.
- I will keep you updated on current trends and changes happening with EMDR and trauma treatment, and I attend the EMDRIA conferences at least every 2 years. I will provide you with new information and accommodate your needs as long as it stays within the scope of my knowledge. I will refer to other consultants if your needs are beyond my scope.
- We will schedule our individual appointments as our schedules permit. Suggested frequency minimum is 1-2 hours per month.
- I make every effort to provide you with a safe and supportive learning environment. Any concerns about this, when shared with me, will be addressed.
- You are expected to come prepared to present case material, complete with notes on that case. Do not include any identifying information on your client-we don’t need it and HIPPA!!
- You are expected to practice within the ethical guidelines of both your license and professional associations. EMDRIA states that if there is no professional association, then the APA’s code of ethics will be the standard for all EMDRIA members. It is your responsibility to stay current on both the laws and ethics applicable to them.
Successful Consultation is similar to the therapeutic alliance where we work as a team to get you where you want to be with EMDR. You get out what you put in so questions, concerns, and feedback are vital to this process and extremely welcomed!
